Richard was born in Cheticamp and spent his formative years in Margaree Forks then Antigonish, before moving to Halifax-Dartmouth to study at Nova Scotia Institute of Technology (NSIT) and pursue his career as an electronics technician. It was there, in the same apartment building, that he met a young teacher named Betty Hird, who would become his lifelong companion and mother of his four children. No matter where he was – his home, their homes, or a campsite – he would make a hot breakfast for everyone. He was a volunteer weather observer for Environment Canada for over 30 years, dutifully taking “the readings” twice a day from his property in Lyon’s Brook. He was a frequent blood donor, surpassing 60 donations. Richard was a deacon and member of the worship team at First Baptist Church, New Glasgow. He enjoyed studying theology and sharing his knowledge and faith with others. In 2015, he received his lay pastor designation through Atlantic Baptist Convention. He is also survived by his sister, Doreen Cunningham, Rothesay, NB; brother-in-law, Jack MacDonald, Truro; sister-in-law, Bev Connell, Westville; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his loving wife, Mildred (Connell); son-in-law, Raymond MacMillan; parents: John and Muriel (Gourley) Dalling; in-laws: Jim and Marion Connell; brothers-in-law: Alex Cunningham, Ralph Connell, Frank McLean, Ugo Salmaso and Jimmy Connell; sisters-in-law: Eva McLean, June Salmaso and Audrey MacDonald; nephews: Michael and Timmy Connell, Anthony and Mario Salmaso. Also to mourn Dad’s passing are his special friends: Courtney Malcom, Jim MacIvor, Barry Trenholm, Donnie McGuigan, Ron and Eldean Shanks. Dad enjoyed memorable and stellar careers in senior hockey and senior baseball. He began his hockey career at Lourdes in 1948-49. They won the Maritime Midget Championship. The next winter, with almost the same lineup, they captured the Maritime Juvenile Crown. He then enjoyed a fine career with the North Side Franklins in the Cape Breton Junior League. North Side won the circuit both years and in the second season, they knocked off the powerful Halifax St. Mary’s who had won several consecutive Maritime titles. Dad moved up to senior hockey with the Moncton Flyers, then was sold to the New Haven Blades in the Eastern Hockey League. After four months in New Haven, he returned home and played for the New Glasgow Rangers and was team captain. This was the year the famous “Kid Line” was formed. He used to say for many years when people recognized him for his hockey prowess that, “Everyone knows the kid”. Dad then played with the Dalhousie Rangers in the North Shore League where they won the New Brunswick Crown. Media articles from his glory days referred to Dad as “starry right winger”, “high scorer”, “pin sharp”, “Ace”, “can set up goals as well as score them”, “top producer”, “front liner”, “smooth”, “the most outstanding junior prospect in the Maritimes in years”, “shining light”, “deadly marksmanship”, “six goal Bert”, “Darling of the North Side Franklins”, “blistering shot”, and “smooth as silk operator”. Teammates and fans alike jumped onto the ice to mob Dad when he played for the Rangers and scored the winning goal in sudden death overtime against St.FX. He was an inductee into the Pictou County Sports Heritage Hall of Fame and The Cape Breton Sports Heritage Hall of Fame. While Dad had many accolades over the years, he enjoyed more the laughs and memories of those great years. He was a man of character and a gentleman on and off the ice. Dad was also an outstanding baseball player with the Westville Minors, the Twilight Senior Baseball League and was team captain for the Stellarton Albions and Sydney Mines Juniors. When he played for the Stellarton Keiths, they won the Nova Scotia Championship in 1965. He acquired the nickname of “Beltin’ Bert”. Dad worked as a sales representative for Neilson Cadbury and became known as the “Candy Man” for his generous giving of chocolate treats to all the kids and adults alike. He and Mom loved to spend summers at the cottage at Black Point and enjoyed travelling to Sarasota, Florida each winter with family and friends. With sports on his mind, he always found time for quick 18 holes, including a hole in one in 1990. Later in life, Dad could be found in the company of friends in various Tim’s, the Crushers’ games or at the Pictou County Sports Heritage Hall of Fame sharing stories of days gone by. MUSICK, Edwin - PICTOU - There are few words to describe the loss of our father, grandfather and brother. Edwin William Musick, 80, who lived on the Murray Road, Pictou for fifty-one years in the home that he built and loved, died on March 1, 2018 surrounded his family at the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow. Born in Victoria Cross, Prince Edward Island, Eddie and his late wife, Anne, came to Pictou, Nova Scotia in 1966 from PEI. He was an Islander at heart and returned to Anne’s homestead on Point Prim for many summers, but his roots in Pictou were strong and deep. Eddie loved his community and the people living in it. In the winters, he coached minor hockey, played hockey with the Old Puckers and was an avid snowmobiler. During the summer months, he played baseball, gardened and worked with his woodpile. He loved music, to dance and was a collector of all things, especially televisions and radios. He earned the nickname, Steady Eddie, through his love of CB radios and was a member of the Worldwide Radio Group and the Maritime East Coast Single Side Band Club. He was blessed to have good neighbours on the Murray Road with whom he formed lifelong friendships. The Chaissons, Arsenaults, Bellfontaines, MacDonalds, and Innis families all looked out for him and each other. As time marched on and social landscapes changed, he found new friends in the Turners. He was a regular visitor to the Scotiabank and Sobeys in Pictou where he would walk up to people with his hand outstretched and say, “Do I know you?”. He always stopped to talk, if even for a brief moment, making everyone he spoke to feel as if their conversations were the most important thing in his day. Eddie worked hard his entire life as a unionized carpenter and had a hand in building some of the county’s most important buildings including schools and hospitals. His sense of humour was his signature trademark. He was never without a joke or a funny story that usually ended with a hearty laugh. Eddie became Anne’s sole caregiver following her stroke and gave her every moment of his time and attention. His heart was large enough for everyone, but she was his priority. Following her death a year ago, he struggled to fill the hole in his life from being left behind, but he learned to accept the love and help of those around him. Eddie is survived by his three sons, Paul (Sueann), Central Caribou; Jamie (Dawn), Scotch Hill and Alan (Gina), Scotsburn. He has six grandchildren, Haley, John, Charlotte, Kaylen, Taryn and Hannah who he loved with all of his heart. He was so proud of them all and would light up when they called or came to visit. He also cherished time with his brother, Rollie (Mary) of Montague, PEI; and sisters, Lila, (Don) Hopkins, of Hamilton, Ontario; Evelyn of Calgary; Linda (David) Clow of Charlottetown, PEI; Brenda (Angus) MacDonald of Glace Bay, and Marlene (David) Stark of Vernon, B.C. They all lived in different provinces, but he was their big brother who they kept close in their hearts. Lastly, we cannot forget his family at the Restorative Care Unit in Pictou. Every Friday for seven years, he brought Dr. Cooper and his staff a coffee as a thank you for taking such good care of him during his stay in the unit. Over time, true friendships developed that will never be forgotten. Eddie was predeceased by this wife, Anne; father, Hudson; and mother, Elsie. Visitation took place Tuesday from 2-3:30 p.m. at Pictou United Church followed by a brief service and reception. There will be a spreading of the ashes in Point Prim in August. Family flowers only. Donations in his memory may be made to the Restorative Care Unit in Pictou. Arrangements are under the direction of McLaren Funeral Home, Pictou. www.mclarenfuneral.ca

William Matthew Naugler passed away at home on March 2, 2018. Born in New Glasgow, NS on May 20, 2002, he was the son of Robert Lewis and Gillian (Roberts) Naugler. William was an exceptional young man, bright, funny, full of energy and the joy of life. He loved to make people laugh with his playful voice imitations, silly faces and imaginative jokes. He was very fond of and good at video games. Building with LEGO was a special pleasure when he was younger. Family time in the great outdoors camping, fishing and just hanging out were favorite activities. He had a deep love of nature and animals, especially family pets. William’s intellectual curiosity lead him to be fascinated with ancient history and he was very knowledgeable on that topic. Besides his parents, William is survived by his half brothers Tristan Roberts, Dylan Naugler and Jordan Naugler; his paternal grandparents Robert and Mary Naugler and his great grandfather Elmer Naugler, all of Sheet Harbour; his great grandmother Theresa Cormier of Port Hawkesbury; and many aunts, uncles and cousins. He was predeceased by his maternal grandparents Patricia and Leo Roberts. Those who wish to honor William’s memory are asked to be sensitive in their interactions with others and to remember that words and actions can have a great impact, either good or bad, on other people. Some forms of teasing, ignoring, talking about others behind their backs, and other actions can be devastating to the person who is the recipient of these behaviors. In William’s memory, please make a habit of performing random acts of kindness. “When words are both true and kind, they can change the world.” ~ Buddha “No act of kindness, however small, is ever wasted.” ~ Aesop Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation. A private Celebration of Life has taken place.
HAUGHAN, Patsy Hazel (Isner) - Lyons Brook. On Thursday, March 8, 2018 our mother spread her wings and departed this life to be free. She passed quietly at the Shiretown Nursing Home in Pictou, with her daughters Andrea and Lisa by her side. It was a peaceful end to a long struggle with Alzheimer’s which she lived with for almost twenty years. Even as her mind and body failed she continued to surprise us all with her zest for life and determination to enjoy every moment. Born in Halifax on Septermber 6, 1934 to parents Clyde and Lillian (Bentley) Isner, Patsy was the youngest and last remaining of six siblings, Vera (Bob Ernst), Dorothy (Melford Lavers), Donnie (Elva), Burton and Robie. Patsy lived with her parents in Fairview while she worked at the Fairview Royal Bank and was an active member of the local United Church as a choir member. She was very active in the lives of her nephews and nieces. She met the love of her life Frank and in 1965 they were married and moved to Pictou County where they raised a family and also built their own home in the growing village of Lyons Brook along the beautiful West River. Patsy loved her children more than anything in the world and spent much of her time taking them to ringette, hockey, ball and any other activities they pursued. Both Frank and Patsy were regular attendees at many sports events that their children participated in. Even as she struggled with Alzheimer’s she continued to support and encourage her grandson Briley to pursue his dreams. While Frank worked at what was Scott Paper at the time, Patsy cared for children at her home. She loved these children just as her own and as they grew up the bond remained, and they continued to a part of her life. Patsy had many pursuits over the years. She was active in the church, the local bowling league, attended the local dances, but no matter how busy she always took time to visit friends and neighbours. She and Frank were both talented dancers and she lived by the motto “Dance like no one is watching!”. Patsy loved life and was always there to pickup everyone’s spirits. When you visited Patsy’s house there were two rules, be happy and take your hat off! It was not uncommon for impromptu parties to develop when friends visited and the house was filled with young and old enjoying music, dancing and laughter. Frank and Patsy were truly kindred spirits who gave generously of their time and love. They are both dearly missed. Patsy is survived by her daughters, Wanda Isner, Cambridge, NS; Andrea Haughan (Lloyd McLean), Lisa (Adam Alylward), both of Lyons Brook; and the light of her life, her only grandson, Briley Haughan, Cranbrook, BC. She was predeceased by her beloved son, Barry; her beloved daughter, Krista and her soulmate and husband, Frank. We wish to thank the staff at Shiretown Nursing Home in Pictou, for the wonderful care they provided. Having her stay in the local area that she loved, and near her daughters, ensured a close connection remained to friends and her family. A celebration of Patsy’s life was held on Sunday, March 11th, visitation from 3:00 - 4:00 PM with service at 4:00 PM from the Lyons Brook United Church. A reception followed downstairs. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the SPCA of Pictou County or the Alzheimer’s Society of Nova Scotia. www.mclarenfuneral.ca

George Gordon Bedford (March 8, 1926 – March 10, 2018), 92 years on this earth was just enough and 34 days without the love of his life, Shorty, was simply too much. George Gordon Bedford passed away peacefully at home March 10, 2018, overlooking his Town of Pictou, with the same determination that defined every aspect of his sterling character and his life. Outwardly known to many simply as ‘Chief ’ and undeniably committed and loyal to the responsibilities entailed in service to his community, he more proudly responded to ‘Dad’ and in later years, ‘Grampie George’, more staunchly embracing the love of family with each passing day. Born March 8, 1926 to Louis and Edith Bedford, himself an only child, he rarely strayed far from his birthplace, in care of his family and community. As a young man, he entered the Pictou Fire Department where he remained active for more than 50 years, his last 44 years, as Fire Chief. This was an around the clock calling, more than a vocation, filled with countless acts of ‘silent service’. He was a Justice of the Peace; built a successful business, literally from the ground up; raised a family; and, found assurance and remained true to his Christian beliefs. His solitude was found on the shores of Waterside, for him, the most beautiful place on earth. He will be remembered for his Christmas spirit, leading the members of the PFD to gift bags of fruit and candy bars to young and old alike; he was Santa for residents of the Oddfellows Home on Christmas morning; and, far more quietly and anonymously, he was a Secret Santa who ensured many others in need also had a Merry Christmas. Those closest to George were rewarded by his insight and wisdom and a memorable story from his past. Indeed, he was, a storyteller extraordinaire! He would recount highlights from his days playing basketball for Pictou Academy and his proficiency with the layup shot; his canteen at the Old Exhibition and the aroma of his famous hamburgers; colourful visits from those who spent a night at Bedford’s Motel, where he coined the “We Sell Sleep”; his many battles in the uniform of the PFD including his day addressing the Provincial Legislature on the perils of municipal amalgamation; and, his overwhelming pride for his family. George is preceded by his Shorty (Shirley) and survived by his son, Lewis (Lisa) and granddaughters, Addisyn and Isabelle. Cremation will be overseen by McLaren Funeral Home in Pictou. The family is grateful for condolences; however, declines flowers and donations. In lieu of visitation, a private service will be held at a future date. www.mclarenfuneral.ca

Thom and Westville Road) age 87, to make his final journey away from the caring angels in Palliative Care and his family at the Aberdeen Hospital. He was born in Stellarton to the late Verna (MacKay) and Francis Grant. He was retired from Michelin Tire and worked most of his early life coal mining in Sydney Mines and Pictou County. In his younger years he enjoyed travelling, fishing with his daughters, skating, riding his bike but particularly enjoyed fiddle music. His own musical ability would see him even in his later days playing his harmonica. He had a sense of humour like no other, always with a joke or a one liner also known as “Ralphisms”. He is survived by his daughter, Margie Grant-Walsh, son-in-law Vernon Walsh (who he called his son), and loving companion, Anita MacDonald, son-in-law, John van Bommel and grandchildren, Anneke (Cameron MacLean) Conquerall Mills, N.S., Rachel (Matt Bigney) Wellington, N.S., Mark, Vancouver, BC, David, Canmore, AB., Vernon, Dartmouth, N.S, Christopher, Cadotte Lake, AB, sisters, Alvenia, Betty, many nieces and nephews. Cdr. Leo I. MacDonald CD, BA, LLB, RCN Retd., Braeshore, Pictou County - Born March 7, 1937, passed away Sunday evening August 26, 2018. Leo attended Pictou Academy and joined the RCN in 1954 at the age of 17 in the first class of the Venture Plan. Over the years, he served in a number of ships including Ontario, Restigouche, Inch Arran, Sioux, Algonquin, Loon, Cormorant, Gatineau, Nipigon, Fraser, Porte St. Jean and Port St. Louis. Leo specialized as an Operations Officer and had his first command (HMCS Loon) in 1965 which involved training naval cadets for the Royal Military College. The Loon was given carte blanche with respect to how training was to be conducted, so one of the first ports of call was Pictou for the Lobster Carnival. The weather was so great that year, the then Lieutenant MacDonald decided to operate out of Pictou as his home port. In 1968, Leo was selected by the Navy to attend Dalhousie University from where he received his BA with distinction in 1970 by which time he was a Lieutenant Commander. In 1972, Leo attended the Canadian Forces Command and Staff College. While visiting the United Nations in New York, he was selected to debate peacekeeping against the USAF Academy in the presence of Canadian and US ambassadors to the UN (Canada won). Leo was appointed as Executive Assistant to the Commander of Maritime Command, the largest Command in the Canadian Armed Forces. Promoted to Commander in 1973, Leo assumed command of HMCS Fraser. During the 2 1/2 years in command, Fraser met every commitment assigned, including a period in the Standing Naval Force Atlantic. Fraser had a great crew with a can-do attitude, winning both fleet Cock of the Walk and SNFL Fleet Sports Olympiad. Fraser was the first Canadian warship to arrest foreign vessels for illegal fishing (Feb 96). For a number of years Leo was able to arrange for a Canadian destroyer to visit Pictou for the annual Lobster Carnival and it was at a reception in one of these ships (HMCS Margaree) that he met Barbara Sharp, who was to become his wife and soulmate. Leo retired from the Navy in 1977 to return to Dalhousie from where he received his LLB in 1980 and was admitted to the Bar the same year. Leo remained in the Naval Reserve and while at law school, during the summers, he commanded HMCS Porte St. Jean and HMCS Porte St. Louis, which of course he took to Pictou for the Lobster Carnival. He qualified as Convoy Commodore with the US Navy. Leo returned to Toronto as Syndicate Director for senior Naval Reserve Officers from across Canada. Leo practiced law in Dartmouth and Halifax before returning home to Pictou in 1984 where he practiced with the firm MacLean and MacDonald until he retired in 2004. From then until his death he remained Counsel to the firm. Over the years, he remained active in community involvement having been Past President of the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary for the Maritime Region (for which he was featured in MacLean’s magazine), Past Vice President of the Nova Scotia Naval Officers Association, Past President of the Pictou West Cancer Society, and past member of Pictou Recreation Committee. Over the years Barb and Leo always had a cottage and great fun ensued. Firing the cannon, water skiing, bonfires and games, wonderful travels and of course our wired hair fox terriers, made for a good life. Leo was predeceased by his parents, Roy and Ethel MacDonald; sister, Shirley Rowley, and his biological mother, Gertie Porteous. Surviving are his wife, Barbara; daughter, Sandy (Michael Gaspar), Dartmouth; grandson, Derek, Toronto; brother, Ron (Kathy), North Bay; sister, Colleen (Michael) Mulville, Toronto; special nephews and nieces. Love and thanks to the medical community who cared for Leo and to our friends for being so supportive, and also a special thank you to Leo’s brother and sister-in-law, Michael and Wendy Pulchny.
